Matthew Tkachuk is back and ready to go as Panthers are set to open training camp SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — There were times this summer when Matthew Tkachuk wondered if he would be ready for training camp, wondered if the fractured sternum that he tried to play through in the Stanley Cup Final would allow him to be on the ice when the season started. And then about a month ago, he started feeling right again. With that, the Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers have their first win of the season — their leading scorer is ready for Thursday’s start of training camp. The facial scruff is in place, the collar has been ripped off his team-issued T-shirt and he has pronounced himself ready to go.“I feel really good,” Tkachuk said Wednesday at the team’s media day, the annual prelude to camp starting. “It’s exciting to be back. It’s more exciting to be back fully ready to go.”That’s not the case with everyone on the Panthers’ roster. Family of black bears spotted in neighborhood in Naples NAPLES, Fla. (WSVN) —A family of black bears were spotted in a Southwest Florida neighborhood. The people living in the neighborhood were quick to notice the animals as they made themselves at home.“It seems like they’re all trouble makers so none of them, I mean, they’re all just being, you know, a handful to this mama and I feel for her,” said Mo Rahman, a neighbor. Without a doubt, the mama bear had her paws full with her four cubs. The bears are constantly up to no good at the neighborhood in Naples.“We had some coolers that one of the little cubs, like, tried to climb over and of of course it toppled over and he toppled over,” said Brittany Riddle, a neighbor. “She left one of then behind the other day, you know, while she took a trash bag over into the woods,” Rahman said. “I’m assuming that was probably the trouble maker of the family,”But even thought the new set of neighbors are rambunctious, residents in this...

Nadia Calviño overcomes another hurdle in bid for EIB top job Nadia Calviño’s ambition to become the president of the EU’s bank received a major boost on Wednesday when the European Parliament removed a significant obstacle to her appointment.Spain’s deputy prime minister is vying with Denmark’s Margrethe Vestager, currently on leave as EU digital and antitrust chief, to become president of the European Investment Bank, in a decision that is pitting the bloc’s governments against each other. While they had hoped to reach a decision earlier this month, officials say uncertainty in Paris about who to back and divisions in Berlin’s coalition government have added greater complications than usual to what could have been a straightforward choice. But in typical EU fashion, Calviño’s chances have been increased because of how the European Parliament moved to fill a completely different job. Lawmakers voted to support Germany’s Claudia Buch’s nomination for the next head of the EU’s banking supervisor. Two SpaniardsBuch, v...

UK’s Rishi Sunak confirms loosening of key green pledges LONDON — Rishi Sunak confirmed a major roll-back of several key U.K. green policies — despite a fierce backlash from business groups, climate activists and some members of his own Conservative Party. In a hastily-arranged speech Wednesday — brought forward after details of his plan leaked — the U.K. prime minister said there was “nothing ambitious about simply asserting a goal for a short term headline without being honest with the public about the tough choices and sacrifices involved, and without any meaningful democratic debate about how we get there.”And he argued: “No one in Westminster politics has the courage to look people in the eye and explain what’s really involved. That’s wrong, and it changes now.” The U.K.’s Conservative government passed a law in 2019 vowing to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Even though that headline target remains in place, Sunak — whose party is trailing in the polls ahead of an expected election next year — has sought...
