Fire in San Benito County consumes nearly 300 acres

SAN BENITO COUNTY – Crews on Wednesday night were battling a nearly 300-acre fire in southern San Benito County, according to Cal Fire.The Idria Fire ignited around 11:30 a.m. on New Idria Road, near the ghost town of Idria.As of 8 p.m., the fire had charred 296 acres and was 20% contained, according to Cal Fire.The cause of the blaze is under investigation.The Idria Fire is the fourth largest of the seven fires Cal Fire is currently fighting across the state. (KRON) -- Police activity has shut down lanes on I-80 westbound near Berkeley, California Highway Patrol confirmed. A Sig Alert was issued Wednesday night around 8:15 p.m. for the closure of all I-80 westbound lanes near Ashby Avenue. Officers make discovery in trunk of suspect vehicle after car chase on Pleasanton freeway As of 8:25 p.m., the right and center westbound lanes have reopened; the left lanes remained blocked. The left lanes on I-80 eastbound are also blocked at this time.It is unknown at this time what has caused the police activity.This is a developing story. (KRON) -- Antioch Police Chief Steven Ford announced Wednesday that he plans to retire. The news comes as the police department is being investigated for racist text messages sent by multiple officers. Ford's retirement will become effective on Aug. 11. ‘Prolific’ thief charged in San Francisco burglary spree "I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have served as your Chief," he said in part. "I have worked with some very talented and passionate people – it has been a great privilege to learn and grow from them."Ford's tenure has been clouded by the racist text message scandal, which involves as many as 45 Antioch Police Department officers. Police said that they have caught members of a “high-end theft crew” who took items from a department store in Virginia without paying and then scattered when confronted by police — with one person found hiding in a dumpster.It happened on July 13, when a loss prevention team alerted police that the group left the Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase, Maryland, in a gold Chevrolet Impala with Pennsylvania tags.Fairfax County officers assigned to the Tysons Urban Team learned that the vehicle had gone into Virginia and was nearby.
