Biden tells Americans to have confidence in banks after collapse President Joe Biden on Monday told Americans the nation’s financial systems were safe, seeking to project calm following the swift and stunning collapse of two banks that prompted fears of a broader upheaval.“Your deposits will be there when you need them," he said.U.S. regulators closed the Silicon Valley Bank on Friday after it experienced a traditional bank run, where depositors rushed to withdraw their funds all at once. It is the second largest bank failure in U.S. history, behind only the 2008 failure of Washington Mutual. But the financial bloodletting was swift; New York-based Signature Bank also failed. The president, speaking from the White House shortly before a trip to the West Coast, said he’d seek to hold those responsible accountable, and pressed for better oversight and regulation of larger banks. And he promised no losses would be borne by taxpayers.“We must get the full accounting of what happened,” he said. “American can have confidence that the bank...

Not only did this record soundtrack my childhood, it has continued to soundtrack my life into my 20s. (Jive/Zomba)My mom was so infatuated with this album. My family still listens to it every Christmas morning instead of listening to Christmas music! My mom used to roll through the pick up line at school pumping her breaks to the beat of “SexyBack.” She used to sleep with VH1 on every night and I remember one day at breakfast she told us that she had woken up to the best song she’d ever heard and thought it was a dream — the song she heard was the outro of “LoveStoned/I Think She Knows.” It’s the part of the song where the beat drops out and it’s just electric guitar; in the video he is standing in a white room and t...

TasteFood: An untraditional soda bread for St. Patrick’s Day

TasteFood: An untraditional soda bread for St. Patrick’s Day Irish soda bread is a quick bread, which means it doesn’t require any yeast or kneading to rise. Instead, it relies on baking soda and buttermilk, which interact for leavening. When the ingredients are combined, the leavening process starts immediately, so the dough should be mixed quickly — hence the moniker “quick bread.” It shouldn’t be overworked, or the bread will be tough.Given its attribution, it seems that an Irish soda bread would be a fitting recipe to post for St. Patrick’s Day. However, upon some research, it appears that what we know as Irish soda bread in the U.S. is not authentically Irish. In Ireland, soda bread is a term for any bread leavened with baking soda (there, it’s called bread soda). The method originated in the 19th century, when baking soda was introduced and before ovens were widely used. At the time, soda breads could be cooked in lidded cast iron pots over a fire.Soda breads were and are efficient and simple fo...

Putting the kibosh on a counter-surfing dog’s food theft DEAR JOAN: My daughter has an 8-month-old malamute who counter surfs and gets on the dining room table. She tries to keep the counters clean, but the dog catches every mistake. Do you have any suggestions?— Julie Hartley, Burlington, IowaDEAR JULIE: For opportunistic and ever optimistic dogs, the surf is always up, but there are ways to put a stop to Moondoggie’s cruising. And yes, I just made a reference to “Gidget,” which likely went over the heads of anyone born in this century.Dogs can be highly motivated by rewards. Consider in the case of your daughter’s dog, the first time the dog sniffed around on the counter or got up on the table, he or she was rewarded with a delicious treat. Even if the pup only found food once, that’s enough motivation to keep trying. The easiest solution, in theory, is to keep the dog out of the kitchen and dining room, especially when food is being prepared or served. Your daughter can try crating the dog or installing a baby gate to block access....
