SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A new law in California will raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 per hour next year, an acknowledgment from the state’s Democratic leaders that most of the often overlooked workforce are the primary earners for their low-income households. When it takes effect on April 1, fast food workers in California will have the highest guaranteed base salary in the industry. The state’s minimum wage for all other workers — $15.50 per hour — is already among the highest in the United States. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the law Thursday amid a throng of cheering workers and labor leaders at an event in Los Angeles. Newsom dismissed the popular view that fast food jobs are meant for teenagers to have their first experience in the workforce.“That’s a romanticized version of a world that doesn’t exist,” Newsom said. “We have the opportunity to reward that contribution, reward that sacrifice and stabilize an industry.”Newsom’s signat...A first is ahead for Connor Bedard on Thursday

CHICAGO — The No. 1 overall pick from the 2023 draft is going to have a first in his career in the National Hockey League on Thursday night. It won't be quite as exciting as a couple of weeks from now, but this will be the first time that Connor Bedard takes the ice at the United Center. That's because the Blackhawks are opening up the 2023 preseason against the Blues on Thursday, one of six exhibition games they'll play before their season opener in Pittsburgh on October 10. Bedard is on the roster for the contest against St. Louis as he takes the ice for the first time in a game against fellow NHL players. Earlier in September, the center took part in the first of two contests at the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase in St. Paul, Minnesota.During that contest against the Blues' best young players, Bedard registered a hat trick, further adding to the anticipation of the start of his Blackhawks' career. Included in that is head coach Luke Richardson, who got to see what the center could ...Peruvian national charged with making more than 150 bomb threats to US schools, institutions

The bombs will blow up in a few hours. I will make sure everybody dies and rots from the bombs and then I’ll gladly smile seeing their families suffer," he allegedly wrote in a Sept. 19 threat to multiple Pennsylvania school districts. The threat caused approximately 20 different schools in Pennsylvania to evacuate more than 1,100 schoolchildren, prosecutors said. The threats occurred between Sept. 15 and Sept. 21, and in some cases caused "massive disruptions" such as school evacuations, a hospital lockdown and flight delays, in the communities where...Minnesota Zoo calls for teachers to apply to 2023 STEM Design Challenge

First in moos, first in brews … and last in the National League. From 1903 through 1939, the old St. Lous Browns landed in the American League cellar only seven times. But the old rhyme about the Mound City’s old second team — “First in shoes, first in booze and last in the American League” — was catchy as heck, so the tag stuck.A century later, purple is the new brown. From 1999 through 2023, the Rockies have finished last in the National League West eight times, five of those coming since 2012. Halloween is soon!!!”Fans became more worried when another video was posted afterward showing what looked like a cut on her thigh and a possible bandage close to her wrist. Spears was wearing the same outfit as the knife video, so many made the assumption that those two factors were tied to the knife video.Spears then posted a new video asking everyone to “lighten up about the knives” and said she was only “copying Shakira.”Shakira r...BoyWithUke at the Fonda
