Chicken Rebel owner replaces LoHi restaurant with coastal brunch spot

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:43:11 GMT

Two customers walked into the old Chicken Rebel space in Denver’s Lower Highland last week, craving a fried chicken sandwich, but they were surprised to find an entirely new restaurant. The name and space might have changed, but luckily, owner and chef Lydie Lovett’s “Nashville hot chicken sammie” is still on the menu. She has since replaced Chicken Rebel at 3618 Tejon St. with Wilde, a new coastal brunch spot, which she opened at the start of October.“Where I grew up in San Diego, it’s all community-centric,” Lovett said. “You walk down the street, and you know a bunch of people. There’s a local watering hole, every restaurant makes you feel like family, and I’ve always wanted to re-create that.”Lovett moved to Denver from San Diego with $300 in her pocket and rode the hot chicken sandwich wave, which was very popular in California at the time. Chicken Rebel started as a food truck in 2017 before moving onto a stall in Avanti and eventually a brick-and-mortar space in LoHi in ...

Fights may loom after Denver Mayor Mike Johnston accepts a fraction of City Council’s budget additions

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:43:11 GMT

The Denver City Council went big when it asked new Mayor Mike Johnston to add more money to next year’s city budget for emergency rental assistance, cash payments for people who are homeless, support for Denver Health and other requests.Johnston has responded by accepting $10.6 million in spending additions — just an eighth of the more than $81 million the body asked for to meet its 2024 priorities in a significant increase from past years. He granted several requests only partially.Multimillion-dollar gaps remain between the council and the mayor as they work to pass a 2024 budget by Nov. 13. The process is giving new officeholders on both sides a lesson in the power dynamics of Denver city government, which favors the mayor on budget matters but gives the council some levers to pull.In coming weeks, the council could attempt to amend the budget to incorporate more of its priorities, while the mayor could veto those changes — at the risk of being overridden, if th...

U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert is getting squeezed from both sides of the political aisle in the money race as she faces a growing field of challengers hoping to thwart her reelection next year.Third-quarter fundraising totals reported in recent days in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District show the Republican incumbent was outraised by her most prominent Democratic foe, Adam Frisch, by a factor of 4-to-1. And Jeff Hurd, a Boebert challenger in next year’s GOP primary, posted sizeable totals indicating he also might pose trouble for the two-term congresswoman.Boebert’s haul for the period from July 1 to Sept. 30 was just shy of $854,000, according to the recent campaign finance reports. Earlier this month, ahead of filing his full quarterly report, former Aspen city councilman Frisch, who narrowly lost to Boebert in 2022, touted a nearly $3.4 million haul during the same time frame.Hurd, a Grand Junction attorney, collected just over $412,000 despite launching his campai...

Goldberg: In Gaza, piling horror upon horror, atrocities upon atrocities

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:43:11 GMT

Watching from afar as people race toward an abyss, I find it hard to know what to write except “no,” over and over. In the face of massacres that for Jews around the world brought back memories of genocide, the language of some Israeli leaders has, in turn, become murderous. On the cusp of a likely ground invasion of Gaza, many people I’ve spoken to, Jewish and Palestinian alike, are terrified that this rhetoric will become reality.Isaac Herzog, Israel’s president, said that the “entire nation” of Gaza was “responsible” for the attacks at a news conference on Friday, telling reporters, “It is not true, this rhetoric about civilians not being aware, not involved.” Herzog later clarified that civilians are not legitimate targets, but his words, coming from a member of Israel’s center-left Labor Party, were still chilling, suggesting a broad political consensus that Gazans are collectively to blame for the horror that befell Israel. “All gloves are off,” Ron Prosor, a distinguished Isr...
