NEW YORK (AP) — When Donald Trump stepped into a Manhattan courthouse Tuesday afternoon, his usual bravado was replaced with palpable anger and notable silence as the former president was reduced to a criminal defendant in custody. By the time he returned to his Mar-a-Lago club hours later, he was ready to unleash.“The only crime that I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it,” the first former president to be indicted told a crowd of hundreds of loyal supporters.Trump made an unlikely transformation from reality television star to U.S. president by tapping into the grievance of Republican voters disillusioned with the political establishment. As he wages a comeback bid for the White House, Trump and his campaign hope that his indictment will serve as a rallying cry that will galvanize the same voters. Already, he has raised millions of dollars off the news. It’s an approach that will test Trump’s “all publicity is good publicit...AP sources: Frustrated team owners boycott NASCAR meeting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR teams boycotted a meeting with series leadership Wednesday as a show of frustration over the slow pace of negotiations on a new business model.Three team representatives told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity that the owners collectively decided to skip the quarterly meeting because they don’t believe NASCAR has negotiated in good faith. The request for anonymity is due to the sensitivity of the negotiations. The owners went public last October with their frustration over what they consider a broken business model in which racetracks and NASCAR make the bulk of the money and teams are forced to fund their organizations through outside sponsorship.NASCAR has said it is willing to work with the teams on financial security, and reiterated that commitment Wednesday after no owners showed for the meeting.“NASCAR is committed to open and productive dialogue on a regular basis with all industry stakeholders,” NASCAR said in a statement. &...White Sox slugger Jiménez sidelined by strained hamstring

The White Sox were off Tuesday. “The most important thing was how he was gonna wake up today and walk in here,” manager Pedro Grifol said. “He was in the weight room right now. I saw him, I spoke to him. He’s strong. He feels better than what anybody else thought he was gonna feel like.”The 26-year-old Jiménez is 4 for 19 in five games. He slugged 31 homers as a rookie in 2019, but played in just 55 games in 2021 after rupturing his left pectoral tendon trying to make a leaping catch in spring training. BRUSSELS — The devil is now in the (legal) details. Two weeks after the EU announced a historic agreement to give Ukraine piles of ammunition, the bloc is still sorting out the legal specifics of how to actually implement it.The squabble has stalled a first-of-its-kind plan to jointly buy ammunition for Ukraine. EU ambassadors met Wednesday to discuss the issue but were unable to make significant progress on one of the key issues, according to several diplomats with knowledge of the negotiations. The bone of contention remains whether these arms contracts will go exclusively to EU companies (and how to legally define them), or also be open to outside manufacturers. France is pushing for the money to stay within EU borders, several diplomats said. And Greece and Cyprus back Paris in a move that some of the diplomats said is linked to their desire to avoid contracts going to Turkish manufacturers. Two diplomats added that the European Commission, the EU’s executive, also ne...Chicago Cubs’ series finale against the Cincinnati Reds postponed because of rain

Eloy Jiménez went from first to third on Andrew Vaughn’s double to right field in the seventh inning Monday. The Chicago White Sox outfielder/designated hitter suffered a low-grade left hamstring strain during that sequence. He was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Tuesday, and will miss an estimated two-to-three weeks.“I didn’t really notice anything, I don’t think anybody did until next time at-bat,” Sox manager Pedro Grifol said before Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants at Guaranteed Rate Field.“He had mentioned that he felt a little something in his hamstring and that he could take his at-bat and that he might need a pinch-runner, and then at that point in time, there was just no use taking any chances so we erred on the side of caution.”When healthy, Jiménez is one of the more dangerous hitters in the American League.
