Infinite Joyce Carol Oates: The Prolific Writer Takes On Dead Wallace

Infinite Joyce Carol Oates: The Prolific Writer Takes On Dead Wallace Via our sister paper The Village Voice:  A look at Joyce Carol Oates’ latest, in which she continues to move up literature’s ladder, looking down upon some of those who didn’t have her stamina.  “The day of Vladimir Nabokov’s death — July 2, 1977 — is firmly fixed in my memory, for on the following day Donald Barthelme said casually to me, ‘Happy? Nabokov died yesterday, we all move up a notch.’” Now, 46 years and many deaths — including Barthelme’s — later, there are presumably few notches left above Joyce Carol Oates.Over the past six decades, she’s been acclaimed (she won the 1970 National Book Award and received a National Humanities Medal in 2010, among other honors), popular (she appeared on Oprah’s Book Club in 2001), and prolific (she’s published well over a hundred books — as a novelist, short story writer, critic, and poet). The opening quote, with its image of Oates already, almost half a century ago, nearing the summit of American letters, hints at her present ...

Stanford president retracts papers following allegations In an admission that caps his downfall from one of the most prestigious posts in academic research, Stanford University president and noted neuroscientist Marc Tessier-Lavigne has retracted two scientific papers bearing his name as an author because of evidence that they contained altered images. The decision, announced in two letters in Thursday’s issue of the journal Science, comes after Tessier-Lavigne’s July 19 resignation as the university’s leader and an official investigation by Stanford’s Board of Trustees into the 2001 research, which described the development and growth of the nervous system. In his statements, Tessier-Lavigne does not say whether the Photoshopped “beautification,” duplication and formatting problems — “undermining confidence in the paper’s conclusions,” he wrote — were caused by error or misconduct. No one has imputed the alterations to Tessier-Lavigne; his fault was a failure to detect and correct the problems.Articles are retracted when ...

Joe Montana gives his take on 49ers’ QB situation, Nick Bosa holdout

Joe Montana gives his take on 49ers’ QB situation, Nick Bosa holdout If there’s anyone who would know all about the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback controversies, it’d be Joe Montana. The four-time Super Bowl champion and three-time Super Bowl MVP had plenty to say as he made a media blitz while promoting a new whiskey on Thursday morning, when he appeared on 95.7 The Game, KNBR and ESPN’s First Take, all in the 8 a.m. PR hour. What did the Hall of Famer who had a years-long QB saga with another Hall of Famer in Steve Young think of the 49ers’ trade of Trey Lance? Montana called it a “tough situation” but thinks it may work out for all parties involved.“I think the biggest thing for Trey is that he needs to find a place that he’s comfortable in the system, and I don’t think I ever saw a comfort level for him in that 49ers’] system,” Montana said on ESPN. “It’s a system that is played inside the pocket and he came from a system in college that always got outside and he had different reads that happened. The pocket is not a place to learn to throw fr...

Fearing economic disaster, Maui wants tourists to return. But feelings are complicated By Julia Wick, Jaweed Kaleem, Christopher Reynolds and Emerson Drewes, Los Angeles TimesKIHEI, Hawaii — The line at Paia Fish Market usually extends so far down the main drag that staffers can’t see the end of it through their front window. But that hasn’t been the case as of late, with tragedy on Maui slowing foot traffic in typically busy spots to a trickle.“Today is the lowest it’s been so far,” said Lehua Jimenez, 21, a cashier at the popular restaurant in Paia — a windsurfing destination on Maui’s North Shore. “It’s continually decreasing.”Paia is half an island away from Lahaina, where the restaurant’s other location was among more than 2,000 structures destroyed in a wildfire this month. But the Paia location was seeing about a fifth of typical sales, said Jimenez. The Maui native and her co-workers were far from the only ones feeling the economic pain. The restaurant had only been open a few hours on a recent weekday and five people had already come in looking for jobs, Jimene...
