Dear Amy: My wife and I have a son who is 22 years old.He will be graduating from an excellent college with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He’s a smart and physically fit young man who has great potential. He plans to join the Navy after he graduates, and his goal is to train to become a Navy SEAL.He wants to “make a difference” in the world and is very gung-ho with defending/serving the United States.Although his intentions are admirable, we are aware that becoming a Navy SEAL is extremely difficult and that the process pushes applicants beyond their physical limits. He is, of course, aware of the rigors of SEAL training and is preparing himself for it.We are extremely concerned about our son being sent into combat. If he is intent on joining the military, we think that he can better serve his country by going into an area where he can use his brain instead of his physical abilities. We have talked to him about this, but he won’t really listen to us (because, of course, we are his p...Jackson-Reed High School students, administrators debate Palestinian documentary screening

SUZU, Japan (AP) — Japanese rescue workers and canine units searched urgently through rubble Wednesday ahead of predicted bitter cold and heavy rain in what the prime minister called a race against time after powerful earthquakes killed at least 65 people in western Japan. Ishikawa prefecture and nearby areas were shaken by a 4.9 magnitude aftershock on Wednesday — one of dozens that have followed Monday’s magnitude 7.6 temblor centered near Noto, about 300 kilometers (185 miles) from Tokyo on the opposite coast. The quake set off tsunami warnings, followed by waves measuring more than 1 meter (3 feet) in some places. The first 72 hours are especially critical for rescues, experts say, because the prospects for survival greatly diminish after that.“More than 40 hours have passed. This is a race against time, and I feel that we are at a critical moment,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters. “We have received reports many people are still waiting for rescue under collapse...‘Bad everywhere’: How DC is using Bluetooth devices in response to rise in carjackings

Michele Dedeaux said that when her daughter’s best friend had her car stolen a few days ago, she luckily had an Apple AirTag inside. The devices use Bluetooth technology to connect to drivers’ phones. The device pinged, Dedeaux said, and the friend was told to go to the nearest police station. The car was eventually located and returned, but despite being gone for just 24 hours, the windows on the car were tinted and the tag had been stolen. The frustration with the rise in carjackings across D.C. has left Dedeaux and many other residents taking every precaution they can in order to stay safe. Learning of her daughter’s friend’s experience motivated Dedeaux to be one of the many residents who stopped by Ballou High School on Tuesday night to get an AirTag or Tile device.D.C. police have been issuing the devices for free in some neighborhoods, and are hopeful that they’ll help police find stolen cars quickly. New York (CNN) — The 2023 domestic box office surpassed $9 billion, the highest since the pandemic, Comscore said. However, it’s still $2 billion short of the yearly movie ticket sales reached before the pandemic.Despite a tepid fall season at the box office, the viral “Barbenheimer” phenomenon delivered a stunning boost to movie ticket sales this year. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” brought in about $636 million domestically and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” raked in $326 million, according to Box Office Mojo.Comscore estimates that, once the past weekend’s box office numbers are in – which was led by “Wonka” – 2023’s total will be just over $9 billion. Compared to 2019, the 2023 box office had 17 fewer wide release films, which makes its numbers “all the more impressive,” said Paul Dergarabedian, chief Comscore media analyst. “Wonka” and “Barbie” were both distributed by Warner Bros., which is owned by CNN’s parent company Warner Bros.
